COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION

ALTIMETER/BAROMETER, POCKET SIZE, WITH CASE

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.

This commercial item description covers pocket-size altimeter/barometers that measure both barometric pressure and altitude. The altimeter/barometer is intended for use in general engineering and surveying.

Salient characteristics:

Design: The altimeter/barometer shall be the aneroid, pocket-size and shall be sturdy, light-weight, compact, adaptable to rapid work, and entirely suitable for severe use. They shall be designed and constructed to withstand extended periods of transportation by hand, pack, air, land, or water. The weight shall not exceed four ounces (excluding carrying case). The pocket size altimeter/barometer shall be temperature compensated to a minimum of -4 ⁰F (-20 ⁰C) to +86 ⁰F (+30 ⁰C, and shall be no mere than 3 x 3 X 1 (7.62 X 7.62 X 2.54 cm) inch in size. The altitude range shall be from 0 (sea level) feet to 15,000 feet (4572 meters), and be accurate to within � 30 feet (9.14 meters), with a minimum graduation of the dial to 20 feet (6.096 meters), and be estimated to 10 feet (3.048 meters). The barometer dial shall be 31 to 22.5 inches (78.74 to 57.15 cm) of mercury. The altimeter/barometer shall be provided with a carrying case, and an operator�s manual explaining the use of the altimeter/barometer. Provisions for zeroing the altimeter/barometer should be provided.

Material. The altimeter/barometer shall be fabricated of hardened plastic.

Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials in accordance with Public Law 94-580 to the maximum extent practical.

Packaging and marking. Military packaging shall be specified when shipments are to overseas Department of Defense (DOD) consignees. Commercial packaging may be specified for shipments to DOD Consignees within the Continental United States and to non-DOD consignees worldwide. When a suppliers normal packaging will satisfy the requirements for military packaging, it may be used.

Military packaging. Each altimeter/barometer with carrying case shall be preserved and packed to protect against physical damage and deterioration in a logistic environment characterized by the following:

1. Multiple handling during transportation and intransit storage.
