COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
LEVELS, SURVEYING, ABNEY TYPE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification GG-L-260E.
This description covers two types of Abney surveying levels used for measuring land slope in degrees or percent of grade and for topographic surveying.
Salient characteristics:
Design: The Abney level shall consist of a sighting tube, an arc plate, an index arc, a bubble vial and two interchangeable graduated scale arcs. The Abney level shall have a nonslip mechanical or friction drive to adjust the index arm and bubble vial simultaneously, and a knurled knob locking mechanism to hold their position after adjustment. The Abney level shall have a flat bottom surface, which will support the level in an upright position, and a stud or ring for attachment of a neck strap. Each Abney level shall be supplied with a carrying case. The carrying case shall be a close fitting container with a belt loop. The opening for the belt loop shall accommodate a 2-inch web belt. The case closure flap shall have a provision to securely fasten a bubble vial adjusting tool inside the case.
Classification. The Abney surveying levels shall be of the following types.
Type I. With a glass reflector of transparent float, plate or sheet glass of select mirror quality.
Type II. With a metal reflector of polished chromium plating.
