COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
COMPASS, DRAFTING, PIVOT, DROP SPRING BOW
PEN AND PENCIL, WITH CASE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification GG-C-550.
This description covers a drop-spring bow drafting compass consisting of a pivot rod, a pivot sleeve, and a spring bow with interchangeable pen and pencil attachments, and a parts kit, for use in drawing small particles in general drafting practice. A case shall be furnished with each compass.
Salient characteristics:
Design: The overall length of the compass shall be between 4 and 5 inches and shall draw circles through a minimum diameter of 1/32 inch to at least 2 inches.
Pivot rod: Corrosion-resisting steel with a hardened needle point. The range if movement shall be adjustable.
Pivot sleeve: copper-nickel-zinc, corrosion-resisting steel, chrome-plated brass, nickel-plated, or anodized aluminum. Only one of the mentioned materials shall be selected; a combination of materials is not allowed.
Spring bow: Corrosion-resisting steel with an integral socket of corrosion-resistant steel or copper-nickel-zinc alloy to accept and clamp the pen and pencil attachments. Only one of the mentioned materials shall be selected; & combination of materials is not allowed.
Pencil attachment: Corrosion-resisting steel or copper-nickel-zinc alloy. The attachment shall securely clamp leads ranging in size from 0.073 to 0.083 in diameter. Only one of the mentioned materials shall be selected; a combination of materials is not allowed.
Pen attachment: Corrosion-resisting steel. Spring blade or spring hinge type. Clean, unbroken and uniform lines 0.004 inch to 0.020 inch in width.
