COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
PLANIMETER, POLAR, COMPENSATING, WITH CASE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-P-20664.
This commercial item description covers Planimeters, Polar, Compensating, used for measuring areas of a plane figure by tracing or optically observing its boundary lines.
Salient Characteristics:
Design: The planimeter shall be of the compensating polar type. The planimeter shall consist of two principal parts:
a. The tracer arm which carries the tracing point and recording carriage with measuring wheel. The arm shall be graduated for an effective length of not less than 6 inches to enable setting the recording carriage vernier to hundredths at any scale within the range of the instrument. The tracer needle shall have an adjustable point, and be provided with a fingertip guider at the outer end of the tracer arm.
b. The pole arm shall be adjustable from approximately 6 inches to 13 inches and have an engraved scale and vernier for settings when the instrument is used with the pole inside a figure. The instrument constant can be adjusted to a round number for any setting of the recording carriage.
Graduation: The graduations on the tracer arm and pole arm shall be machine divided and shall be spaced not more than 0.5 millimeter (mm) when the metric system is used, or 0.025 inch when the decimal inch system is used.
Area Coverage: The planimeter shall measure the area within a circle having a 16 inch radius when the pole is within the circle and shall measure the area of a circle 12 inches in diameter when the pole is outside the circle.
Testing Rule: A metal testing rule shall be furnished with each planimeter.
