TENSION HANDLE, STEEL MEASURING TAPE,
SURVEYOR’S
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-T-11752B.
This description covers a spring- scale tension handle for use with a surveyor’s measuring tape.
Salient characteristics:
Design: The tension handle shall be as specified herein. The surveyor’s steel measuring tape tension handle shall consist of a spring-scale body with a jump ring and snap hook, for attachment to a surveyor’s steel measuring tape at one end, a jump ring and tape pull at the other end of the body, and a leather carrying thong. A typical tension handle is shown in figure 1.
Spring-scale body. The spring-scale body shall be graduated for a length of not less than 2 inches in 0.50 pound increments from 0 to 30 pounds.
Accuracy. The spring and pointer assembly shall indicate the applied load to within 0.50 pound in the range between 10 to 30 pounds at +75 °F (24 °C) and to within 1 pound at -25 °F (-32 °C) and at +125 °F (52 °C).
Tape pull. The tape pull shall be readily detachable.
Snap hook. The snap hook shall be of the swivel type and suitable for fastening to the end loop of a surveyor’s steel tape.
Leather carrying thong. The leather carrying thong shall be not less than 36 inches long, 0.250-inch wide, and 0.117-inch thick, and shall contain between 0.20 and 0.50 percent paranitrophenol to render the thong fungus resistant.
